Oklahoma State Record Brown Trout

It has been said that records are made to be broken, but on April 10, 2005, Oklahoma's state record for brown trout of 9 pounds, 12 3/4 ounces, was not only broken, it was shattered! Jason Archie of Broken Bow, Oklahoma caught a brown trout that not only surpassed the old record, it nearly doubled it with a catch of 17-pound, 4.64-ounce. Whether it's Black Bass fishing on Broken Bow Lake or fly fishing for Rainbows and Brownies, the fishing is fantastic!

There are several outstanding opportunities for fly fishing in McCurtain County. The Lower Mountain Fork River offers 14 miles of trout habitat. It is a tailwater fishery flowing out of Broken Bow Lake and includes a 3.8 mile Trophy section where boats and barbed hooks are banned.

Other fishing opportunities are exceptional on the Reservoir and in the Mountain Fork River. Primary river species include smallmouth bass and sunfish. The Lower Mountain Fork River designated trout area (below Broken Bow Dam) offers year-round fishing for both rainbow and brown trout. You can also fish the Upper Mountain Fork and Eagle Fork Rivers for Neosho-strain smallmouth, as well as Kentucky spotted bass, largemouth bass, sunfish, and a seasonal run of walleye and sand bass.

Broken Bow Lake, located ten miles north of Broken Bow, has 180 miles of shoreline and is one of Oklahoma's most scenic lakes. Broken Bow Lake is known for its black bass fishing (largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass are all present). Other popular species include walleye, crappie, catfish, and various sunfish.

Pine Creek Lake, located approximately eight miles north of Valliant, also has a high ratio of shoreline length to water area and is conducive to good fish production. Principal fish species include crappie, white bass, largemouth bass, channel catfish, flathead catfish, and various sunfish.

The Glover River has protected areas for wade fishing, and fishermen are known for catching perch, smallmouth and largemouth bass and other species. Fishing is best on the upper section of the river, above the rapids and faster moving waters. The Glover River offers fishing in a scenic and remote location. The Glover is also home to the Neosho-strain of smallmouth as well as the Kentucky spotted bass. The Glover River is Oklahoma's last free flowing river and is surrounded by National Forest property and private landowners.

Red Slough Wetland Reserve Project, located approximately 17 miles east of Idabel, has species such as bass, sunfish and crappie.
