Oklahoma State Record Brown Trout

It has been said that records are made to be broken, but on April 10, 2005, Oklahoma's state record for brown trout of 9 pounds, 12 3/4 ounces, was not only broken, it was shattered! Jason Archie of Broken Bow, Oklahoma caught a brown trout that not only surpassed the old record, it nearly doubled it with a catch of 17-pound, 4.64-ounce. Whether it's Black Bass fishing on Broken Bow Lake or fly fishing for Rainbows and Brownies, Oklahoma Fly Fishing is fantastic!

There are several outstanding opportunities where you can experience some of the best Oklahoma fly fishing right here in McCurtain County. The Lower Mountain Fork River offers 14 pristine miles of trout habitat. As a tailwater fishery flowing out of Broken Bow Lake, it includes  3.8 miles of Trophy Oklahoma Fly Fishing action where boats and barbed hooks are banned.

Other Oklahoma Fly Fishing opportunities are exceptional on both the Reservoir as well as in the Mountain Fork River. The main river species include smallmouth bass and panfish. The Lower Mountain Fork River is a designated trout area (the area below Broken Bow Dam) offers year-round fly fishing for both rainbow as well as brown trout. You can also choose to fly fish the Upper Mountain Fork and Eagle Fork Rivers for Neosho-strain smallmouth, Kentucky spotted bass, largemouth bass, pan-fish, and a seasonal run of walleye and sand bass.

Broken Bow Lake, located ten miles north of Broken Bow, has over 180 miles of shoreline and is recognized as one of Oklahoma's most scenic lakes.  Known for its black bass, largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass, Broken Bow Lake represents a thriving fishery in the region. Other popular species include walleye, crappie, catfish, and various species of  pan fish.

Pine Creek Lake, located approximately eight miles north of Valliant, is conducive to good fishing partly because it has a high ratio of shoreline length to water area. Principal fish species include crappie, white bass, largemouth bass, channel catfish, flathead catfish, and various pan fish species.

The Glover River has protected areas for wading fishing, and fishermen are known for catching perch, smallmouth and largemouth bass and other species. The fishing is best on the upper section of the river, above the rapids and faster moving water. The Glover River offers scenic and remote location fishing. It is also home to the Neosho-strain of smallmouth and the Kentucky spotted bass. The Glover, surrounded by National Forest property and private landowners, is Oklahoma's last free flowing river.

The Red Slough Wetland Reserve,  approximately 17 miles east of Idabel, harbors species such as bass, pan fish and crappie.
